The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
